The old Patrick Henry Field is now a fully operational airport with flights from American and Delta, as well as Air France, Virgin Atlantic, and even smaller airlines like Allegient. If you want to get away from the crowd, Hilton Tavern Brewing located in historic Hilton Village is a wonderful brewpub that also serves great food. Twisted Knot and Tradition are particularly popular with the after-work crowd, as they are both situated in Oyster Point, a major commerce park. Many residents find themselves enjoying craft beers at one of our many microbreweries. While many think of Virginia Beach as being the place to go on a Friday night, Newport News folks don’t have to leave town to have a good time. Recent government changes have given greater incentives for businesses to grow and thrive in Newport News, and we, the consumers are the ones reaping the rewards! Patrick Henry Mall has all the usual department stores, but expanding across all of Newport News, you can find many unusual shops for whatever you are looking for. Some of the best shopping in Hampton Roads can be found in Newport News. Eustis, the US Army Transportation Museum is always a fun place to take little ones and older folks alike. The Mariner’s Museum is home to the largest maritime library in the western hemisphere! The Virginia Living Museum is considered by many to be the best interactive natural museum in the entire Mid-Atlantic region. Situated between Hampton and Williamsburg, Newport News is an obvious location for culture and history. There are more than 30 parks in Newport News city limits, including Lee Hall Mansion, Endview Plantation, Huntington Park, several piers, and even a beach! Newport News Park is more than 7,500 acres, contains bike trails, hiking trails, disc golf courses, flying fields, fishing, floral gardens, camping areas, and even boat and bike rentals. The Noland Trail is a 5-mile trail runs through the park, with easy access points all the way around. Sure, we have the shipyard and all the commercial areas, but balancing that are parks such as the Mariner’s Museum Park, which is 550 acres of lush woodland. It all makes for interesting gossip and intrigue but in all the years we have visited antebellum houses we have never witnessed a true-to-life ghost story.There are miles and miles of nature trails running through Newport News. Please note tickets are shipped Monday - Friday and exclude Busch Gardens tickets. And, of course, strange activity has been observed at the plantation cemetery. In recent years, Endview has attracted paranormal enthusiasts who believe the plantation house is haunted by Confederate general John B. In 1985, Endview was acquired by the City of Newport News, which restored the historic plantation to its original configuration. From all indications, the property has attracted hunters, farmers and soldiers for over 3,000 years. Archeological evidence has shown that the later Woodland/Riverine tribes, popularly known as the Powhatan Confederation, seasonally occupied the area up to the time of the English settlement at Jamestown in 1607. Endview was designated as a Virginia Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The property also has been used for military reenactments, including events related to the 225th anniversary of the Siege of Yorktown which was held in 2006. Located at 362 Yorktown Road on Virginia State Route 238 in the Lee Hall community northwest of Newport News, Virginia, it was situated along the Great Warwick Road, which linked the colonial capital of Williamsburg with the town of Hampton on the harbor of Hampton Roads. Endview, which was built in 1769, was used as a hospital during the Civil War and as a campground during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. As dedicated Civil War historians, my wife and I can never get enough of antebellum plantations and battlefields. We learned about Endview while planning our visit to nearby Lee Hall.
